Nuwara Eliya Travel Guide: Best Things To Do

March 26, 2019

Nuwara Eliya, known as Little England of Sri Lanka, it is the most important area for tea production due to its cooler climate. Not only the climate but also the surroundings and architecture of this area are different than other villages on the island. Exploring tea plantations is the highlight, but not the only thing to do in Nuwara Eliya. Here are our top things to do in Nuwara Eliya:

Stroll around Victoria Park

Victoria Park is a beautifully maintained garden in the heart of the city, home to quite a number of hill-country bird species. The entrance fee is 300 Sri Lankan Rupees and at the far end of the park, there is a small children’s playground and miniature train. This park is the place to relax and enjoy the natural sights and clean mountain air.

Chill around Gregory Lake

Gregory Lake is a reservoir in heart of the Nuwara Eliya, that has been converted into a sort of Lake Park with many recreational activities. There you can find people with boats, jet skis and bicycles for rent and you can also do horse riding. Take some time to relax around the lake and have a delicious meal in one of the restaurants around.

Explore the tea plantations and visit a tea factory in Sri Lanka

The impressive lush green tea plantations are best to visit by tuk-tuk and for 1250 Sri Lankan rupees (around $7) you can arrange a full day trip that includes tea plantations, tea factories, viewpoints and the Ramboda waterfall. It’s really nice to see how the tea process works and you also get a small tour around the factory. At the factory’s shop, you can buy some of the products but the prices are ridiculously expensive. We highly recommend you to wait and buy these exact same products in town. Stop at several viewpoints overlooking the plantations and drink some tea at the impressive tea factories. Take some photos of the surroundings but make sure you have small cash on you (like 20/50 Sri Lankan Rupees): every employee that gets caught on your photo will ask you for a tip.

Explore the Ramboda Falls in Nuwara Eliya

Ramboda Falls is located at the end of the tea plantations route, and it takes 45 minutes walking to reach it. These waterfalls are composed of multiple levels, so simply get into the water and climb! As part of the tour or not, this is a really nice experience to have in Nuwara Eliya. Just be careful since some parts are slippery!

Morning hike to the Single Tree Hill

Located just 3 km away from the city centre, Single Tree Hill is a beautiful viewpoint that shouldn’t be ignored. Get up really early in the morning and be prepared for a 45-minutes walk. We highly recommend you to continue the hiking until the top of the mountain. The views up there are amazing however keep an eye on the weather conditions, rain or fog can totally ruin the experience.

When to visit Nuwara Eliya?

Nuwara Eliya has its own climate so keep in mind that it can get very cold in Nuwara Eliya compared to other areas in Sri Lanka. The worst time to visit is from June till the end of August since it will be the monsoons.  In February, we had 16 degrees in the evening a huge difference compared to other areas of the island (25ºC).

How to get in Nuwara Eliya?

Have you ever heard about world-famous Sri Lanka’s most beautiful train ride? The ride takes 4 hours and goes from Kandy to Ella. Nuwara Eliya happens to be located right in between those two cities. A ticket from Kandy will cost you 400 Sri Lankan Rupees (around $2,50) and has been mentioned as one of the most beautiful train routes in the world. Expect friendly smiles or questions during the trip since this train is also used by locals.  If you’re visiting Sri Lanka in high season try to buy your tickets in advance since there are limited tourist seats available. These trains don’t really stick to their schedule so we highly recommend you to get one of the early trains. Especially, if you don’t want to drive through tea plantation while it’s dark outside.

Where to eat in Nuwara Eliya?

For breakfast, afternoon tea or a complete meal, these are our favourite spots in town:

  • Gregory Green Restaurant
  • Ayurveda Coffee Shop
  • Coffee Bar Grand Hotel
