Kandy Travel Guide: Things To Do In Kandy

on
March 21, 2019

Surrounded by beautiful tea plantations and mountains, located in the heart of Sri Lanka, Kandy is the second-largest city of the island, about a 3-hour drive from Colombo. We stayed in this cute beautiful town for 2 days and we loved it! Here’re our top things to do in Kandy:

Kandy

Walk around the Royal Botanical Gardens near Kandy

Located 6 km away from the city, Royal Botanical Gardens was one of the most beautiful gardens we ever visited. Here you can find an enormous variety of flowers, trees and bushes as well as some monkeys and flying foxes. The entry fee is 1100 rupees ($5), there’s a lot of young people walking around and we actually enjoyed visiting this place more than we thought we would. They have a Memorial Garden where a lot of famous people such as Queen Mary or Gandhi have planted trees. If you want to spend a day surrounded by nature this is the place!

Visit the beautiful Temples in Kandy

Temple of the Tooth

Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as Temple of the Tooth, is a beautiful Buddhist Temple in Kandy, highly visited by monks, where many rituals take place throughout the day. There, you can see the tooth box behind a glass window and usually it gets really busy, so we recommend going as early as possible to avoid crowds.

Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue

Located 1,5 km away from the city centre is one of the biggest Buddha statues of Sri Lanka. If you like hiking, you can walk there otherwise you can always grab a Tuk Tuk on the way. This is an incredible viewpoint, where you can have a panoramic view of the city. The entrance fee is 200 rupees and you need to get barefoot to go in (so consider an extra donation for the guys who keep your shoes).  Inside you can read a few interesting facts about the biggest Buddhas and if you climb up the stairs on the back of the statue, you’ll have an even view.

Take a walk and relax by Kandy Lake

Kandy Lake is located in the heart of Kandy, right next to the Temple of the Tooth and it’s the most iconic place in the entire city. The scenery is pretty, there’s a lot of trees around the lake and you can find a lot of different bird species living there. Right in the middle of the lake, there’s even an island and you can find several peaceful spots perfect to just sit and stare at the river.

Have a meal in one of these restaurants

Food is one of the reasons we love to explore a new country, so here are our recommendations for Kandy:

  • Balaji Dosai ( Vegetarian)
  • Sri Krishna Dosai (Vegetarian)
  • World Spice – KCC ( Food court  – Italian, Indian, Chinese & Sri Lankan)
  • Licensed to Grill
  • Foodland’s Restaurant

 Take a beautiful train ride

Take the train through the green tea plantations to Nuwara Eliya or Ella and get mesmerized by the surroundings. We didn’t get the chance to this (since rented a Tuk Tuk) but this train ride has been mentioned as one of the most beautiful train routes in the world! So why not?

We highly recommend this train ride! It will cost you around 400 Sri Lankan rupees ($2,50) and it takes 4 hours to Nuwara Eliya and 7 hours to Ella.

Where to stay in Kandy?

We stayed at The Radh hotel and we couldn’t be happier with our choice! If you’re looking for accommodation we recommend you to stay in the city centre or around the lake, so you can go everywhere by foot.
